Simplicity and functionality are the central components of this impactful residential renovation.

Five rectangles: wood, concrete, copper, turf, and meadow are balanced within the small urban backyard; artfully arranged and scaled to the family’s uses, the design subtly provides privacy and programmatic clarity. By maximizing opportunities for play and entertainment, the flexible space easily morphs from badminton course to fireside get-together. The perforated copper screens were reclaimed from Minneapolis’ Westminster Church and are complemented with custom precast concrete benches; the materiality and formal organization provide a modern touch to this classic Lowry Hill home. The resultant space is contemporary, tranquil, and provides the kids a stellar backboard for jump-shots!
